How Does It Feel To Be 40?
As the youngest amongst my friendship group, I've watched many of my friends turn 40 over the last few years, each time one of them celebrated their signature birthday, I'll be honest I felt rather smug, but also felt a sense of impending doom. Eventually it would be my turn.
40!!! It sounds so very old, it's the first age I remember my parents being....I mean that's really old!!
So why does it feel so good?
I spent my 20's rushing from milestone to milestone, getting married, buying our first home and even having my first baby boy. In my early 30's, I experienced the trauma of a miscarriage and had my second baby boy, which then led to post natal depression for a year, my early early 30's are a bit of blur. The rest of my 30's I was busy perfecting the impossible juggling act of being a working Mum, Parenting 2 young boys and supporting my husband who launched his own business. Oh and we moved house twice.
Now here I am at 40. I have fine lines and grey hairs to prove it, I'm also probably at my heaviest weight ever. So why am I so blooming happy?
My children are now at an age where parenting is much easier, we are getting our lives back, they know how to behave in a restaurant, they are good company and family time is so much easier, in fact it's a real pleasure. We have made the leap from being parents and kids to being one family. We are Team Jarman.
I have a great life/work balance, with a job I enjoy, or at least I do most of the time. I'm not sure the guilt of being a working Mum ever really goes away.
Financially we are more secure than ever and we're just in the final stages of completing the finishing touches to a large renovation project on our dream home. Gosh I'm exhausted just thinking back over the last 20 years!
Life is good, I've spent the last 2 decades making wonderful friends, establishing my own family and finding out who I am. I've been busy, building a life and now those foundations are down and the bricks are built, I'm ready to live and love the life that I've been nurturing and working towards for 2 decades.
Oh and did I mention the 40th celebration's started with a new Diamond Bling! Now you know how it feels to be 40. The saying is true "Life Begins At 40".
